strangers to each other
(by afghan artist shekaiba azizi)
Roger Cohen, NY Times Op-Ed, ‘Feeling Bleu’, 24th June 2020:
When self-image and reality part company, when the differing worlds of a nation are strangers to each other, an explosion is always possible.
*
for the second time in a day, an op-ed columnist of the ny-times has read my mind and said something that is frighteningly reminscent of the sichyashun here (the sichyashun that we as a nation seem to be hurtling along with abandon into the abyss).
no wonder the gray lady is the consummate newspaper of record and repute.
A very unfortunate news I heard the other day, I am hoping it is not true,
Javid jan or who ever has access to the website please write something, to know that javid is ok!!!?

He jumped into the Panjsher River to save a drowning colleague and is now missing. Please hope and pray for him and his family that he will be found alive, and soon. He is so needed here with us. But the search efforts need help… Email me if you have suggestions: cswang@princeton.edu

Ahmad Javaid Zeerak (aka Hamesha) whose photo “On The Road (Kabul, Winter 2008). is the basis for a painting I did, was an Afghan citizen, had studied International Political Economy and Political Philosophy in the United States; and served as a consultant for the Rural Enterprise Development Programme Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development. He was one of the key persons to conceive of it; and was the Chief Executive Director of the program. I discovered, after a search, that, on July 9, 2010, Javaid and a collogue drowned in the Panjshir river. Javaid was known for his commitment to his people, his passion towards enterprise development, his eloquence, and his leadership style. Javaid had a Flicker account called “From Afghanistan With Love,” under the name Hamesa, and a blog; that is where his photos were on display. When I could not reach him to get permission to use his photo as a basis for this painting, I started a search, and learned this tragic news. My heart is broken.
