esta tristeza que trago
this sadness which i carry
was from you that i received
oh people of my land

in a bit of a bittersweet surprise (a little like fado itself) a certain insanely insane madman (who sounds a bit like the sluggishly sluggish slug) who i suspect is a longtime visitor to this blog has posted a video of the fado Ó Gente da Minha Terra by the talented mariza in reply to the post porque no that i shot from bamyan when i was there a few days ago, and which i thought would be a shame to not give more of a spotlight here:

and here, for the benefit of those who like me are deprived of knowledge of the beautiful romance language of portuguese, a translation of the fado:
oh people of my land
it is now that i have perceived
this sadness which i carry
was from you that i received
this fado is both yours and mine
the destiny that unites us
no matter how much it is denied
by the strings of a guitar
whenever one hears a lament
of a guitar’s song
one is instantly lost
with a longing to weep
it would seem a kindness
if i let myself be soothed
the greater the anguish
the less sorrowful my song
oh people of my land
it is now that i have perceived
this sadness which i carry
was from you that i received
