this land

sometimes in moments of sublime clarity associated with my not infrequent fits of insanity, it occurs to me that for heirs of alberuni and avicenna’s birthplace we have truly become a country of professional fools. woe unto us.

maybe i am crazy. maybe. but i submit for your perusal:

as the rest of the world gets together to recognize the millenia old tradition of nawruz as an international day, an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, and an “affirmation of life in harmony with nature, the awareness of the inseparable link between constructive labour and natural cycles of renewal and the solicitous and respectful attitude towards natural sources of life”, we get together and ponder: “hmmmmm… so how can we have a fight about this one in order to prove even more than before that we are a bunch of out of touch, backward looking, regressive philistines and frankly plain old fucking crazy?”

and the answer comes from nigh on high that yes, let us make nawruz into a subject for another culture war. let us bastardize it every which way. let us rename it into this and that day. and of course that old trick up our sleeves: let us denounce it as unislamic.

woe.

  1. I take it you didn’t spend the day drinking yourself under the table. Pity.
