art and vienna

life and fate have conspired (amazing how these two find ways to conspire against helpless, unsuspecting me time and again) and as a result i find myself here in an imperial castle in the beautiful little town of baden a short distance from vienna, and just back from a special evening tour of one of the leading private collections of art in europe owned by the house of leichtenstein.

and in general, two things remain affixed to my otherwise forgetful and melancholy mind:

one, in the library -containing some of the rarest surviving volumes in old europe- i observed a bust of voltaire, and then one of scipio africanus.
an avid historian was at hand and we got to talking about scipio’s exploits and drew an alternative and rather elaborate course for human history had that military genious of all time hannibal not been defeated at the hands of the roman general.

and two, and this one a tad reminder of the header image on this blog, nicolas colombel’s ‘atalanta and hippomenes’ from c. 1680.
