e.m.ps punching holes

this morning i read in the current issue of the economist magazine that researchers have discovered an altogether different industrial use for electromagnetic pulses (emps.)
usually utilized in warfare to fry computers and defense systems and shut the electricity of entire cities (remember ocean’s eleven?), highly charged emps are now used for cutting holes through sheets of steel.
the design is beguilingly simple and yet amazing: super-charging a highly concentrated coil so that it creates such a strong magnetic field that strongly repels and actually punches a hole through a metallic object bearing similar charge. i don’t know about you, but that stuff really amazes me… blows my mind away… so to speak
