!بگرییم تا خدا رحمش بیاید

this morning while getting ready for work i was listening to this exceptionally good performance of the timeless piece of folk music from afghanistan “biya ki borim ba mazaar” by an iranian classic singer with a good band of backup singers, and got the shivers when they got to this one line that sounded so pained, so poignant and immediate:

بگرییم تا خدا رحمش بیاید

and we shall weep until god himself takes mercy

i don’t know how it sounds in its english translation, but for those who have heard the song in farsi and understand it, and who have heard it in the various voices of saraban, ustaad mehvash, ahmad zahir and others over the years, it is loaded with longing and emotion, and a little bit with the very story of this tragedy-befallen land itself and its syncretic brand of belief -what ustadd rahnavard zaryab once called “this beloved traditional islam of ours”.

بگرییم تا خدا رحمش بیاید
نهیم بر چشمِ خود قفلِ طلا را

…بیا که بریم به مزار
