happy birthday madiba!

the living conscience of our time, nelson rolihlahla mandela, turns 90 years old today.

Nelson Mandela

here is a wish for peace, health, and happiness for mandela.

for a man who spent a third of his life -his most productive years no less- in captivity. and who, in prison, transformed his captors and galvanized a reluctant world behind his cause. and who, when he finally came out of imprisonment, found it in his heart of gold to forgive his most bitter enemies. and who devoted his career to truth, to reconciling former enemies, and to healing a bitterly torn nation.

men like him give the rest of us in the troubled parts of world a measuring stick to hold our leaders against -and hopefully our leaders a moral compass to turn to in their hour of difficult decisions. men like him are living proof that we can all rise above ourselves, and our own darker sides, and that no matter what flaws we have or what mistakes we make, in the end, there is a way to be good still.

so here is a birthday wish, from a dusty midday of kabul to the hills of qunu, for madiba. may you live longer and smile ever more, because the world needs your great spirit.

also do yourselves a favor and watch ‘goodbye bafana’ this very weekend.

‎”Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful ‎beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ‎ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are ‎you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. ‎There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure ‎around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the ‎glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let ‎our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As ‎we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”‎
