Ruminations on LFW

The well-known fact that you may have not known is that I am an insatiable fashion buff. Here is an excerpt from an earlier piece “Scissor Snippets” I wrote on the subject:

“…Especially that subspecies of the bourgeoisie upper crust that forms the fashion afficionado circlets around the world and do little else but travel around the world from Milan to Paris and occasionally to Madrid and Hong Kong and then back. The height of their pretention (which is all innocent and harmless), their self-seriousness, their penchant for half-learned art history phrases, and their death-desire to appear intellectual which lands them of all places in that most obvious pitfall of pseudo-intellectualism -all of these I find irresistably attractive. And the models -oh the poor models. They are all bona fide Lolitas, tools of the much older and much more cynical Humbert Humberts that people the fashion industry. They are all so pure, clean, minimalistic, white, crisp, thin, and tan, and plastic, and tall. They do not so much arouse a sexual desire but a curiosity and affection. And oh, as of late they all appear so tragic -rendering them manifold more attractive.”

Well, nowadays is when the famous London Fashion Week is in full swing, and to my utter dismay, I am missing it – yet again.

But that does not mean I do not follow it by other means. Here are a few glimpses:

rats!

spikey!

straps!

It may give away my own utter misunderstanding of what the whole thing is about, but in fashion, especially in crazy, avante garde, totally nuts, over the edge and sometimes offensive fashion, I see glimpses of humanity’s hopeful future. Yes, I see hope for humanity hidden in all those robes and folds and straps and lines and textures and colors and fabrics.

It is art at its most sublime, which means lying at its most clever -and oh it is all so heartbreakingly beautiful! They are brief glimpses, nay revelations, of the human desire and ability to transcend. And that transcend part is what captivates and fascinates me -evokes my doe-eyed admiration.

If language, in the form of poetry, represented the height of art during one era of human history; and music -in the form of chamber music and the like- another era; and architecture another; and painting and cubism the other – then fashion is our era’s standard-bearer of art. As the 9th symphony answered the hidden and suppressed desire when the catholic church was swinging left and right, and Ghazal when painting was forbidden and music made Haram and skulls were made into towers, then this creation is our day’s answer to the war in Iraq and the hypocrisy prevailing everywhere else…
